A well-informed board starts with ongoing learning

Education helps directors understand financial reports, oversee maintenance, conduct productive meetings and recognize when professional advice is needed. Make it a shared board responsibility rather than expecting one person to know everything.

New to the board?

Begin with DBPR’s education page and an appropriate condominium board certification course. Pair your training with a review of your association’s declaration, bylaws, rules, budget and current projects.

Already serving?

Choose courses around the decisions your board faces next. Use legal updates to identify changes that deserve follow-up with your manager, attorney or accountant.

Every association has a well-informed and capable board. That is Board Synergy’s vision—and education is one practical way to work toward it.

Understanding our community organizations

Does UCO educate board members?

Yes. UCO provides information and assistance that help condominium directors understand community procedures and matters of common concern. Its published resources include association forms, service information, welcome materials and the UCO Reporter. Contact UCO for current educational presentations or learning opportunities.

The distinction is in the organizations’ stated purposes. UCO’s posted bylaws describe a broad mission of representation, information, assistance and cooperation; they do not separately identify board education as an express purpose in the way COOCVE’s bylaws do. This is a comparison of their written purposes, rather than a ranking of their services or a conclusion that UCO cannot provide education.

UCO: information within a broader mission

Article III of UCO’s posted 2020 bylaws addresses collective owner interests, concerns and requested assistance, access to professional expertise, community communication and negotiation. Sharing knowledge supports that work. The same article protects each association’s independence while allowing requested cooperation.

COOCVE: education expressly identified

At Century Village East, COOCVE’s Article III expressly includes education, research and recommendations. It also describes seminars, information about webinars and videos, support for boards and owners, and a website serving as an informational and research library.

How Board Synergy can contribute

Board Synergy’s educational focus can complement UCO’s community responsibilities through practical resources, peer learning and the planned Board Leadership Academy. Helping directors prepare for their work can strengthen cooperation with UCO, WPRF, property managers and qualified professionals. Each association retains its own decision-making responsibility.

For directors: use UCO for its current community procedures and information, and use the course providers on this page for structured learning. Confirm the approval and credit for any course before relying on it to satisfy required director education.

Before you register, confirm what counts

Board certification, continuing education and general educational programs serve different purposes. A useful webinar or downloadable presentation does not automatically satisfy a statutory education requirement.

  1. Choose the correct association type. Confirm that the course applies to condominium directors. HOA and cooperative requirements may differ.
  2. Confirm the course and provider approval. Check DBPR’s current information and the provider’s description. Credit for community association managers is not automatically credit for condominium directors.
  3. Check how attendance is verified. Follow registration, participation and completion instructions. If watching as a group, ask whether each director needs an individual registration and attendance record.
  4. Check the format and price. Confirm whether the offering is live, self-paced or a recording, whether it provides credit, and whether a fee or membership is required.
  5. Preserve the certificate. Give a copy to the association’s designated records custodian and track your own completion dates and upcoming education needs.

DBPR’s education page distinguishes its self-paced certification course from downloadable reference material. Use the actual course enrollment link and complete its requirements; reading the reference slides alone is not certification.

Guidance and reference resources

Keep reliable information close at hand

These resources support learning and research. They are not presented as credit-bearing courses.

Official state resources explain agency services and requirements. Law-firm articles provide professional commentary. Management and industry publications offer operational perspectives. Check publication dates, current law and your governing documents when using any source.

Turn a course into better board practices

  1. Choose one practical topic. Identify a real board need and ask two directors to attend relevant education.
  2. Share what you learned. Bring a short summary and useful links to the next properly noticed board meeting.
  3. Verify before changing a procedure. Ask the appropriate professional how the lesson applies to your association.
  4. Assign and follow up. Document the agreed action, responsible person and target date. Review whether it improved results.

Useful topics for Century Village boards

For group learning, DBPR accepts requests for educational presentations. That can be a useful option for a Board Synergy event, subject to the Division’s availability and arrangements.
