Confirm your building’s current collection arrangements

October 2026 update: SWA says its new collection contracts began October 1, 2026, with some changed collection days and transition delays. Check current service information before reporting a missed pickup. Older Century Village schedules should not be treated as confirmation of today’s route.

Century Village uses shared collection areas and containerized service. Ask your manager or UCO to confirm the current hauler, garbage days, recycling days, bulk day, placement rules, and seasonal changes for your association. General single-family cart instructions are not automatically the instructions for an association dumpster.

Post a simple building-specific notice with the confirmed schedule, effective date, and reporting contact. Update it when the service changes.

Renovation debrisContractor’s arranged removal serviceKeep cabinets, concrete, demolition debris, and similar materials out of ordinary association dumpsters.

SWA’s blue-and-yellow system separates containers from paper. Put recyclables in loose, without plastic bags. Plastic bags, foam, shredded paper, utensils, straws, foil or pans, paper towels, napkins, batteries, and light bulbs do not belong in these recycling containers.

A recycling symbol is not a guarantee of acceptance. Check the current SWA guide when unsure. Hazardous items require special handling even if they are not recyclable.

Bulky items need advance coordination

UCO’s published containerized collection guidance distinguishes ordinary garbage, bulk furniture and appliances, and construction debris. It instructs residents to put accepted bulk items beside the dumpster at the approved time, rather than inside it.

Before moving a sofa, mattress, appliance, or large cleanout pile, ask the manager about the current collection limit and staging location. Keep dumpster lifting access, walkways, parking, and emergency routes clear. Arrange additional collection when the load is outside regular service.

Do not assume that leaving an item next to a dumpster makes it eligible for pickup. Large glass, renovation materials, and oversized loads may require different handling.

Renovation waste is part of the contractor’s job

Include removal of demolition and construction debris in the written scope of work. Identify who supplies a suitable container, where it may be placed, and who pays for removal. Confirm association approval and applicable requirements before bringing in a temporary dumpster.

UCO’s guidance says residents’ ordinary collection service does not cover contractor construction debris removal. A full dumpster of renovation material can prevent normal garbage collection and shift the problem to neighbors.

Do not assume automatic reimbursement. If the association incurs a cleanup charge, document the facts and check its documents and legal authority before charging a particular owner.

Some items need special disposal

Battery and chemical safety

Never put lithium batteries or devices containing them in garbage or recycling containers. SWA provides separate drop-off guidance; large batteries may need special arrangements, and EV batteries are not accepted by SWA.

Check SWA’s hazardous waste guidance for paint, solvents, automotive fluids, fluorescent lamps, and other chemicals. Verify accepted materials and facility hours before traveling.

Needles and electronics

Keep needles and other sharps out of trash and recycling bins. Use an approved sharps disposal route and secure container; SWA’s recycling information card lists 561-837-5900 for disposal information.

Ask SWA about electronics and devices needing separate disposal. Remove personal information from devices when practical before recycling.

A practical board and manager checklist

  1. Confirm the service. Record the current hauler, collection days, container sizes, limits, and additional pickup arrangements.
  2. Make instructions visible. Use large-print signs and simple examples near containers and in welcome materials.
  3. Inspect the area. Assign routine checks for overflow, leaks, broken lids, litter, blocked access, and pests.
  4. Plan for seasonal demand. Track recurring overflow and ask about additional service or larger containers before peak occupancy.
  5. Control renovation waste. Include disposal expectations in contractor instructions and project approvals.
  6. Track problems and costs. Keep missed-pickup reports, photographs, service responses, and special collection invoices together.

For older residents, keep disposal areas well lit and accessible and consider how someone with limited strength or mobility can use them safely. Residents should ask for help with heavy items rather than climb into a dumpster or move bulky furniture alone.

Small habits protect shared spaces. Consistent instructions and prompt maintenance work better than a cluttered area full of conflicting notices.

Who to contact

Start with your association manager for container access, overflow, cleanup, or unauthorized dumping. Provide the association name, location, waste type, expected pickup day, and a photograph if safely available.

SWA Customer Information Services: 561-697-2700 for collection concerns and disposal guidance. Confirm the current schedule first.

UCO: 561-683-9189 or admin@unitedcivic.org for community coordination and the appropriate service contact.

Report hazardous material or suspected dumping without confronting anyone or handling unknown substances. Call 911 for an immediate emergency, including a fire.

Keep one dated instruction sheet at each collection area

Board Synergy recommended practice Have management confirm the current service in writing, then publish a simple building-specific notice with collection days, set-out windows, accepted materials, bulk arrangements, and the reporting contact. Remove superseded notices.

Service procedure / contractual duty Confirm the current hauler and collection terms for the actual association. The October 2026 provider transition does not establish that every historical schedule or special-pickup rule continues unchanged. Governing-document requirement Any proposed owner charge or sanction needs its own authority and process; an extra collection invoice alone does not establish a collection right.
