In a medical emergency, call 911 first
Do not delay emergency help to check insurance or community contract coverage. Give the dispatcher your building name, unit number, street address, and the nature of the emergency. Follow the dispatcher’s instructions.
Century Village’s published ambulance guidance directs residents to the 911 system. Responding emergency personnel assess the patient and determine the appropriate transport arrangements. An AMR vehicle may be involved, but residents should not attempt to select a provider based on expected billing.
Call 911 for emergency help. Contact UCO later for questions about the community arrangement.
What is AMR?
AMR means American Medical Response, an ambulance and emergency medical services provider. AMR is part of Global Medical Response.
Century Village West Palm Beach has historically had a UCO-coordinated ambulance agreement involving AMR/Medics. UCO Reporter articles explain that arrangement, and UCO’s published 2026 draft budget includes an ambulance-contract expense. Neither a budget line nor an old article establishes the current contract’s complete benefits.

Do not assume every ambulance ride is free
A March 2018 UCO Reporter explanation distinguished eligible resident transport by AMR from Fire Rescue transport and guest transport. It described help through UCO when a covered resident received an AMR bill.
A September 2018 article also emphasized medical necessity and limits on transfers. Treat these as historical background: confirm current eligibility, covered trips, exclusions, and charges with UCO and the provider.
| Situation | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Emergency transport | Call 911. The actual transporting provider and current coverage determine billing afterward. |
| Fire Rescue transport | Do not assume the AMR community arrangement pays another provider’s bill. Contact that provider and your insurer. |
| Hospital-to-hospital transfer | Ask the treating facility to coordinate medically appropriate transport and verify coverage. |
| Hospital discharge, rehab, or nursing facility transfer | Verify destination, medical necessity, authorization, provider, and any patient charges before a planned trip. |
| Return home or a medical appointment | Ask whether ambulance, wheelchair transportation, or another service is appropriate and available; do not assume it is included. |
| Guests, seasonal residents, or changed residency | Confirm how the current agreement defines eligibility. Different Century Village communities may have different contracts. |
Ambulance coverage and medical necessity
Medicare Part B covers qualifying ambulance transportation when another form of transportation could endanger your health. Coverage generally concerns the nearest appropriate facility able to provide needed care. Certain non-emergency trips may qualify under specific conditions.
Under Original Medicare, after the Part B deductible is met, the patient generally pays 20% of the Medicare-approved amount. Community contract benefits, supplemental insurance, or other coverage may affect the amount actually owed.
Medicare Advantage members should check their own plan’s ambulance and non-emergency transportation benefits. A doctor’s order or a scheduled appointment does not, by itself, guarantee payment.
Official Medicare ambulance guidanceIf you receive an ambulance bill
- Identify the provider. Check who transported you, the service date, and the invoice’s account number. An AMR bill and a Fire Rescue bill are separate matters.
- Contact the billing office promptly. Use the contact information on the verified invoice or provider’s official website. Ask whether the Century Village West Palm Beach agreement was considered.
- Ask UCO about contract eligibility. Provide the service date and relevant paperwork through an appropriate private channel.
- Check the insurance explanation. Compare the bill with your insurer’s explanation of benefits or Medicare notice. Ask about missing information, denials, and appeal deadlines.
- Keep a written record. Save correspondence, reference numbers, and any corrected bill. Ask whether collection activity can be paused while a dispute is reviewed.
Do not ignore the bill or assume it is automatically an error. Verify the amount before paying a disputed charge and keep track of deadlines.
A provider name, service date, and documented coverage question are more useful than a general assumption that all village ambulance service is covered.
A practical household checklist
- Keep your full address, building name, and unit number where visitors or caregivers can find them.
- Keep medication, allergy, medical contact, and emergency-contact information accessible for responders.
- Have your insurance cards and resident identification available without delaying a 911 call.
- Discuss emergency access with your association and trusted contact.
- For a planned transport, confirm who books it, the appropriate vehicle, pickup arrangements, and expected charges.
- Tell visiting family that emergency help starts with 911, regardless of guest coverage.
Boards can include this guidance in welcome information and periodically ask UCO for current contract instructions to share with residents.

AMR — provider and billing questions
Use AMR’s official website or the contact information on your verified invoice. For planned transport, ask the treating facility or UCO for the current local scheduling contact.
Confirm current office hours through UCO’s contact page. These contacts do not replace 911.

Board Synergy recommended practice
The useful next step is a current coverage summary supported by the executed agreement—not a broader promise based on historical articles.
- Ask UCO: Request the agreement’s effective dates, eligible residents, transporting providers, covered trip types, exclusions, and the current billing-assistance procedure.
- For a planned trip: Ask the facility and provider who arranges transport, whether authorization is needed, the appropriate vehicle and destination, and possible patient charges. Document the answer and contact.
- For a disputed bill: Track the provider, service date, invoice and insurance references, contacts, appeal deadlines, and written resolution. Never delay a 911 call while researching contract benefits.
